the Lamb of God

by General James Green, June 2006

JOHN THE BAPTIST introduced Jesus as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (Jn 1:29). This Lamb was no ordinary lamb. This Lamb was God in flesh! Dear brother John knew “and bare record that this is the Son of God” (Jn 1:31-34). This did not “sit well” with the religious leaders of Jesus’ day. Oh, no, the people of Israel were waiting for a Lion, not a meek Lamb.

     Indeed, how often do religious folks reject the Lamb of God as merely nothing, awaiting His second return as the ferocious Lion that is ready to tear into His enemies? How often does the Church reject Jesus’ humility?

     Acts 13:23 says, “God, according to His promise, raised unto Israel a Savior, Jesus.” Now that the long-awaited Messiah had “come to town”, as a Lamb, most of Israel didn’t even want Him at all. But John’s whole purpose was to get the nation of Israel to repent, and taught “that they should believe on Him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus” (Acts 19:4). Let me tell you something, Christians: this ought to be our sole purpose, at least our most important one, THAT WE INTRODUCE JESUS TO THE LOST AND DYING WORLD.

The Leadership Is Trouble!

Religion is BIG BUSINESS! It is also a bag of snakes! How can I say this? Well, did the religious order of Jesus’ day accept Him? NO! You see, in order to “Behold the Lamb of God”, Israel would have to take her eyes off her rituals and ceremonial ordinances, which she so much LOVED and VALUED because they brought her great prestige and a very good living too. Sure, the Jews were jealous over their positions that they jealously preserved and their rituals that they religiously observed.

     My dear readers, do we see this same evil spirit in religion today? We do! Trust me: religious leaders, for the most part, love their positions, their fame, and their fortunes more than Jesus, or Jesus’ people. Religion is BIG BUSINESS.

Consider This

If the religionists beheld Jesus and accepted Him as the true Lamb of God, the Messiah, it would mean they would have to take their eyes off the following things:

—their great solemn feasts;

—their great sacrifices (i.e., “great” in the sight of men only);

—their proud Abrahamic descent and genealogies;

—their ruling body, the Sanhedrin;

—their priests and Levites, used in the “vaunted” temple worship;

—their ritual fasts, alms and vain meritorious works;

—their prized circumcision rite (religiously performed);

—their holy sabbath;

—their traditions of the elders and the vain commandments of men;

—the Law of Moses with its washings and Old Covenant ceremonies;

—the Pharisees and scribes and all other proud, blind guides;

—their uppermost seats in meetings.

Jesus Did What They Feared

Everything these religious folks believed in and trusted in would be cast aside if they truly BEHELD Jesus. Well, everything was cast aside—in the right way for those who believed; in judgment for those who did not. God wanted ALL of Israel to REPENT, but they wanted to RESENT.

     All their hypocritical works were done to be seen and heard of men, not God. But realistically, God definitely wanted to preserve Israel, not destroy her. Jesus was sent to lead the people out of darkness and into the Light, for Jesus is THE WAY to the Light. Do you think the Church of today is walking in the Light?

     In God’s favor, Peter the Apostle broke from that oppressive religious system of ritualistic Judaism. Peter described religious Judaism as “a yoke upon the neck...which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear” (Acts 15:10). For the most part, the religious system of today is not oppressive like the Mosaic Law (as far as being religiously strict, etc.), but it is still greatly oppressive, for it is liberal, sinful, and so it oppresses God Himself! The Church’s acceptance of the “New Morality” is no better than Israel’s (hypocritical) “Old Morality”.

The Call of the Hour

Once again the voice of God’s messengers are aggressively crying out, “Flee Babylon!” The Voice of God sounding thru His true anointed messengers is ringing loud and clear. The mighty Voice preeminent shall be that of the TRUE Shepherd, calling His TRUE sheep and lambs unto Himself. And the religious order will pitch a real fit! They don’t want to lose their good-paying salaries.

The Battle Cry

Isaiah put forth the battle cry of his day when he declared, “The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” (Isa 33:14). Surely Isaiah was a man, yea, a Spirit-led prophet who walked uprightly and warned others to do the same.

     Isaiah goes on to say in the next verse, “He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil” (v. 15). Friends, finding that kind of Christian today is very, very rare indeed! Do you think the Lord Jesus, the Holy Ghost and our Heavenly Father wants His true people to dwell among vile people? I say NO!!

     Verse 17 says, “Thine eyes shall see the King in His beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.” Oh, PRAISE GOD! My dear readers, this kind of vision only comes from a sincerely pure heart and a right spirit. The wicked church folks see no beauty in Christ or His ways. If we walk uprightly, then we will surely see. The eyes of them that see shall not be dim. Are you blind? Are your eyes dim?

     You see, we that really love Him are both saved and changed by our Godly inner vision. It says of Paul that he was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. And we can’t have a pure heart or 20/20 (perfect) vision while looking upon vileness and wickedness. We keep a genuinely clean heart and sharp vision as we steadfastly persevere in contemplating or beholding our Lamb of God.

“Fill all my vision, Lamb, I pray,

Let me see only the Saviour to-day;

When through this life thou leadest me,

Give me Thy Glory and Beauty to see!”

     If we wholeheartedly accept the Lamb of God today, tomorrow we’ll reign with the Lion of God. Amen.
